Open source has a number of relaed meanings. Often it is used for open-source tools that are produced by communities of developers who contribute to the code base on platforms such as GitHub; the sourec code of these often have Creative Commons or similar licences, inlcuding sometimes copyleft licences. It may also be used for commercial code that may not be free to use, but where the source code is available to view, even though protected by a commercial licence; typically you are allowed to experiment and use for research purposes, but not to distrbute in a free or commercial applicatio that competes with the owner. As an extension of these the term is also used, in bith menaings, applied to the models or other paramters, etc., of deep neural networks, large language models or other AI models. Finally, the term is used, especially in legal circles, for open source evidence that is gathered from platforms such as TikTok or Facebook.
